Time Out London

I spent two weeks at Time Out with their editorial team, working closely alongside Kate Lloyd their impressive features editor. It was at Time Out that I got my first byline in print. First of all, I covered a section called Housing Crisis, where I interviewed a specialist regarding an issue a reader had sent in. I was then given the responsibility of producing the ‘Free Page’ for that week’s publication. This involved researching and compiling the best free events in London that week and writing small descriptions about each event in Time Out’s fun, witty tone. My final print byline was a small piece in the Escapes section about a charity campaign to save a famous artist’s cottage.

At Time Out I also gained plenty of experience writing articles for online. I wrote five stories for the digital team including press releases such as: ‘Pret has launched 15 new vegan dishes to save your plant-based new year’s resolutions’ and features such as ‘Seven ways to spot the perfect café’. Whilst at Time Out I refined my research and writing skills, learning what events, culture and voice would engage with their readers in order to make my stories more successful.

Whilst on placement here I was lucky enough to attend a film screening with Time Out’s brilliant film editor. Drafting a review of this film, I was provided with helpful feedback on my writing and gained experience in writing about topics that I wouldn’t usually cover.

Within only two weeks at Time Out I learnt so much, gaining an insight into how a weekly magazine is written, edited and published. Contributing my own ideas and copy to this process was an incredibly rewarding experience and I hope to write for Time Out again sometime in the future.
